Swimming Pool Chlorine and Bromine Essential Pool Chemicals

The two most important steps that are required to keep your swimming pool safe and healthy for your swimmers are circulation and sanitization. While proper water circulation simply requires a pool filter system, sanitization requires the use of chemicals. The two most common chemicals used to achieve this purpose are pool chlorine and bromine. While these two chemicals share certain characteristics and serve similar purposes, there are also several differences between them. Depending upon your personal preferences and situation, you may favour one over the other.

The reason why it's so important to sanitize your swimming pool with pool chlorine or bromine is that these chemicals destroy bacteria and other harmful contaminants that may be present in the pool water. If not properly dealt with, these contaminants can reach dangerous levels and can potentially transmit illnesses and infections to swimmers. On the other hand, by following a regular maintenance routine and using the right chemicals, your swimming pool can be a very healthy and sanitary environment.

As already mentioned, pool chlorine and bromine are both used to kill bacteria and contaminants. However, each chemical works in its own way. When added to pool water, swimming pool chlorine breaks down into a variety of chemicals including hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions. These chemicals deactivate and destroy microorganisms such as bacteria by attacking their cell walls and then destroying the internal enzymes and structures of the cell. This causes the cells to become oxidized, which leaves them in a harmless state. Once the chlorine molecules have combined with the microorganisms in this way, they become inactive and can no longer continue to sanitize the water. This is why pool chlorine has to be routinely added to the water.

When swimming pool bromine is added to water, it forms hypobromous acid. Hypobromous acid is the oxidizer and sanitizer which will then react with microorganisms to deactivate them. This reaction between the hypobromous acid and the contaminants results in combined bromine or bromamines. However, unlike swimming pool chlorine, much of the pool bromine will remain active even after killing the bacteria and other contaminants. Naturally, this means that less bromine is required to keep a pool sanitized as compared to chlorine.

However, the differences in their chemical reactions and the amounts of each chemical required to keep water healthy and sanitized are not the only contrasts between pool chlorine and bromine. For instance, swimming pool bromine is a pre-stabilized chemical while some swimming pool chlorine is not. Also, because bromine is pre-stabilized, it often works better in warmer temperatures than chlorine, making it a good choice for sanitizing spas and hot tubs. However, pool bromine dissolves at a much slower rate than chlorine does and, as a result, it has to be added to a swimming pool through an automatic chemical feeder.

Another difference between pool chlorine and bromine is the fact that chlorine is a harsher chemical than bromine and is more likely to cause skin and eye irritation. For this reason, bromine is often a good choice for pool owners who have sensitive skin. At the same time, however, it's important to note that bromine is a chlorine-based chemical and is therefore not a chlorine-free alternative for people who suffer from chlorine allergies. Pool bromine also produces less of an odour than chlorine does, which can be an advantage for people who find the chlorine smell unpleasant and overwhelming.

While swimming pool bromine has several advantages over chlorine by being less harsh and by producing less of an odour, it can be more difficult to wash away bromine's chemical smell from your skin after swimming. Also, the main disadvantage of using pool bromine as a sanitizer is the cost, as bromine tends to be significantly more expensive than chlorine. However, if you are prone to skin or eye irritation or are particularly sensitive to strong odours, then it may well be worth paying the extra money to use swimming pool bromine as your pool sanitizer.

When deciding whether to use pool chlorine or pool bromine to keep your swimming pool healthy and safe, you will need to consider all of the advantages and disadvantages of each chemical as well as your particular needs and circumstances. No matter what choice you ultimately make, however, both chemicals are widely available from retailers of swimming pool supplies. Once you have purchased everything that you require, make sure that you read the product instructions carefully so that you can ensure that you are sanitizing your swimming pool in the safest and most effective way possible.

Pressure Washers The Heavy Duty Cleaning Machines

Pressure washers are often the cleaning machine of choice when it comes to tackling really tough cleaning jobs. Unlike steam cleaners which tackle dirt by dissolving them from the surface, pressure washers take a much stronger approach. They literally blast stains and sedimentation from the surface - this makes them an ideal tool for cleaning projects in commercial and industrial areas. But before you invest in one, it?s important to understand why investing in the right kind of pressure washer is so important.

Pressure washers are one of the few cleaning machines that can really make a dent in an industrial cleaning situation. The reason for this is simple - most industrial units have unique and difficult cleaning needs. Apart from the ordinary dust and dirt these places face on a daily basis, these areas also have to deal with industrial stains and deposits made from a variety of different materials. Ordinary grime deposits can be difficult enough to handle; but, add some industrial debris and grease to that grimy sediment and you have a very tough cleaning job on your hands. To make matters worse, a number of these residues tend to solidify, making them even harder to remove. Even with harsh chemicals, some of these deposits can only be removed partially.

Remember that the machinery used in these kinds of areas can get damaged if these kinds of dirt deposits aren?t cleared away regularly. Apart from that, it can become a health hazard for the workers as well. Therefore, in these situations it is imperative to use heavy-duty cleaning machines like pressure washers, your best bet to deal with even the most aggressive stains completely and effectively.

Just as there are a number of different kinds of dirt sediments and stains, there are also different kinds of pressure washers. It?s best to invest in a machine that is most fitted to your specific needs. For example, if your cleaning situation involves clearing up things like heavy grease, oil and grime, then steam pressure washers are the machines to use. Apart from the power of high pressure levels, these machines also use high temperatures, ideal for dissolving and removing difficult oil and grease deposits.

There are also industrial pressure washers that have lower pressure levels and low flow rates as well - these are ideal for lighter cleaning jobs, where strong pressure could damage the surface material. Cold water pressure washers are also available for cleaning jobs that don?t require degreasing. These machines have a number of advantages. One of which is that they are less expensive, as they do not have a heating component.

When choosing your pressure washers, look into hot water, cold water and steam pressure washing equipment to see which will suit your cleaning needs best. If you find that you require all three kinds of pressure washers, it?s best to opt for a machine that has all three features in one unit. This means that you won?t have to compromise on your cleaning - best of all, you?ll have the convenience of all three powerful cleaning machines in one powerful unit.

Home Alarms Systems How to Keep

After I had my home broken into, I finally decided it was time to get an alarm system installed. Of course if I had any common sense, I would have thought to get one before anything like that ever happened. But as such is the case, better late than never I suppose. At least now I feel much more secure when I'm away because I know that my house is being monitored at all times.

Believe me, aside from losing some of my valuables, I think the worst feeling was knowing that my personal privacy had been violated. Some stranger actually went through my personal things! That had a greater psychological effect on me than actually losing a few personal belongings. The truth is, they didn't take all that much. The police said it looked like teenage vandalism more than anything else. However, none the less, that stripped away my sense of comfort and security about my own home! Its a sad thing when you can't even feel secure in your own house.

So began my quest for a good home security system. I would like to share with you what I have discovered and learned about the many different types of systems that I came across in my pursuit of the ideal home alarms system for me.

Hopefully this will act as an informative guide to give you a better idea on what you may need in regards to a good home alarm system.

First of all I have come across what I would say are the four main categories of Home Alarms Systems.

1 Do it your self systems
2.Wireless systems
3 Hard wired systems
4 Portable alarms systems

Ok so which one do you get?

The best way to determine what is the best system for your needs is to break it down into these two main categories.

Do you live in your own home or do you rent an apartment?

If you have your own home then it would be best to buy a wireless or hard wired system preferably with a monitoring service.

These will offer you the best security for your home because they come equipped with emergency response systems that can alert the right authorities depending on what type of alarm is sounded. There are many different features that you can choose from within these types of alarm systems as well. More on that in a moment.

If you rent an apartment, then your best options would be to buy a 'do it your self'(DIY) alarm or purchase a portable system.

There are a couple of reasons for this. Namely most established home security companies do not offer monitored systems for a rented dwelling. It is still possible to have a monitored system installed of course, however you would have to make an arrangement with your landlord to split the costs, and the system would still be in his/her name.

The benefits of portable systems and do-it-your-self systems is that they can be purchased at most local hardware stores, are inexpensive and easy to install. Depending on quality and performance, the prices can range anywhere from twenty dollars to approximately two hundred and fifty dollars.

Both portable and do-it-your-self systems come with a variety of basic features depending on the cost. The cheaper systems will come equipped with a few door and window sensors , these are usually wireless and battery powered. The draw back is that the batteries need to be checked regularly to ensure your system is working properly. More advanced systems will also come with motion detectors as well as door and window sensors. You may want to get a system that is electrically powered that also contains a back up battery to ensure constant security. This way,in the event of a power failure, you can be rest assured that your system will still function.

Although these systems don't offer the same security as home monitored systems do, they can still be quite effective in thwarting a burglary. All in all, it is better to have some security measures in place than nothing at all.

Now lets take a look at hard wired or wireless monitored home alarms systems. If you have your own home then this is definitely the best option for you.

These systems can come with a variety of features, ranging from window, door sensors, and motion detectors, perimeter sensors , surveillance cameras, panic alarm buttons and fire alarms. A good alarm company will also include professional installation, ensuring that all the main entry points are covered, that the system functions properly, and the installer will also give you a detailed explanation on how to use it properly.

The main differences between a hard wired system and a wireless system is basically the cost. Hard wired systems will tend to cost more because of the extra hardware and because the installation will be much more complex.Installing such a system will require the drilling of holes and placement of wires through the walls. There tends to be more maintenance involved with hard wired systems as well.

In my opinion,a wireless system is the best choice because of its equal effectiveness and of course its alot friendlier on the wallet.

You will have to make a decision based on your needs and budget, as a fully equipped system with all the "bells and whistles can cost quite a bit. A high end system like this can start anywhere from one thousand dollars and go up to two or three thousand dollars. This does not even cover the monitoring fee, which can usually range from twenty to forty dollars a month.

However besides having the benefit of home security, you can actualy save money on your house insurance premiums. You can get up to a 10% discount on your premiums depending on the cost and quality of your security system. So this can help offset the costs of maintaining your home alarm system.

It is always recommended to shop around as much as possible and take your time in deciding which is the right set up for you.

Guide To Buying Garden Furniture

Your garden is an extension of your home, and creating an outdoor living room is an easy way to add extra space to any home. All you have to do is choose the right garden furniture (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-.html).

So, just as you choose a sofa or a dining set, you want to make the right decision when it comes to choosing your garden furniture. There are two major factors to bear in mind: what do you want your furniture for, and what materials will your garden furniture be made of.

Who will use your garden furniture?

First, think about how you will use your garden furniture. Are you going to have lots of barbecues (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/gardeneco-outdoor-living/gardeneco-barbecues-buy-gas-bbqs-patio-heaters-and-charcoal-barbeques-cheap-low-prices.html) and larger gatherings, or is your garden a haven for just the two of you? Or maybe you have a larger garden, and want to create several seating areas ? one for dining, one for catching the late evening sun where you can relax with a book, and a secluded little area where you can enjoy a morning coffee and a magazine once everyone else has gone off to school or work.

Dining sets (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-/garden-furniture-sets/all-weather/rectangle-table-sets/gardeneco-garden-furniture-porto-fino-large-bow-rectangular-table-with-6-stacking-chairs-and-free-parasol.html **) for the garden

For those barbecues, think about a large rectangular table (36-46in), which will comfortably seat 4 or 6 people. Dining-style chairs with high backs (and cushions) will be more comfortable.

Folding garden furniture (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-/garden-furniture-sets/all-weather/chairs-only/gardeneco-black-multi-position-reclining-armchairs-x4-.html)

If space is limited, and you don?t think you?ll use your larger garden furniture on a regular basis, think about choosing chairs and tables that can be folded up, and stacked in a garage or shed. Folding chairs are useful when you have extra guests.

Table for two

For an intimate arrangement, bistro tables are a great choice. A round table with two chairs is perfect for popping out for that summer drink or cup of coffee and won?t take up too much space. You could add a couple more folding chairs in case you have extra visitors.

Curl up in a garden arbour

For an attractive seating area off a garden path or next to a beautiful border, a garden arbour bench is perfect. The bench is usually big enough for two (or one, curled up with a good book), and growing climbing plants around it can enhance its beauty. For a quick effect, choose annual climbers such as sweet peas, which will form a scented haven, or a Clematis Montana, which by its second year will be rioting over your arbour, regaling it in pale pink/white flowers. A slower growing climber, such as ivy or Russian vine can be planted at the same time.

What will your garden furniture be made of?

The style of your garden, your budget, and storage facilities will dictate what your garden furniture will be made of.

Mixed materials

For a stylish contemporary look, go for garden furniture comprising wood, metal and glass. Colourful all-weather material (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-/garden-furniture-sets/all-weather/round-table-sets/gardeneco-garden-furniture-porto-fino-round-red-glass-table-with-4-recliner-chairs-and-free-parasol-and-base.html**) will really make a statement.

Hardwood garden furniture

Hardwood such as teak, oak and ash is the most durable choice for wooden garden furniture. Make sure your garden table and chairs comes from a recognised supplier who?s a member of the WWF Global Forest and Trade Network or FSC. To keep it looking its best, wooden garden furniture should be protected from the elements (store in a shed or garage over winter, or invest in some good-quality garden furniture covers) and treated regularly with wood preserver. But wooden garden furniture can also be left outside all year round if you want it to weather naturally.

Softwood garden furniture

Softwood garden furniture, such as pine, is beautiful in most gardens, though particularly suited to more rural, cottage-style environments. Ensure that your chosen garden furniture is made with wood from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Look out for the FSC logo.

Aluminium and metal garden furniture (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-/garden-furniture-sets/all-weather/rectangle-table-sets.html**)

If you want low-maintenance garden furniture, metal garden furniture is for you. It?s easy to just wipe clean and metal and aluminium garden furniture can be left outside in any weather conditions.

Glass garden furniture (**http://www.gardeneco.co.uk/garden-furniture-/garden-furniture-sets/all-weather/rectangle-table-sets.html)

On a cloudy day (and we have a few of those!) glass garden furniture will reflect any sun there is, adding light to a shady area. It?s also easy to maintain ? just wipe clean.

Resin furniture

Resin garden furniture is a good budget option. It?s easy to clean and lightweight.

Garden furniture accessories

Parasols

To shade a garden dining table ? or even keep off those spots of rain, a parasol is essential. Look out for some fantastic coloured-parasols this year, or stick to classic dark green or cream.

Garden chair cushions

Even the most comfortable garden furniture will benefit from a bit of padding. Adding a new set of cushions is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your garden furniture.

Garden furniture buying guide Q&A

I?m short on space? Can I still have garden furniture?

Think about buying a folding garden table and chairs. It can be moved out of the way if the children want a game of football.

How about garden furniture for a sunbathing fan?

Look for a recliner or lounger. Both have several positions, so you can sit more upright if you?re reading, or lie back for a snooze in the sun.

Where will the children sit?

If you have a large family, or have lots of young visitors, you might like to buy them their own garden furniture. There are some wonderful colourful garden furniture sets around for children, with matching chairs, tables and parasols, all built on a miniature scale. If children are going to sit on adult garden furniture, choose solid, stable chairs that are hard to tip over, and with rounded edges to prevent knocks and bumps. Washable cushions are a good idea too!

FoolProof Tips for Cleaning Wood Surfaces

From furniture to countertops, walls to stairways, wood is probably the most common material in our homes. But this well-known material is all too often abused by daily wear and tear, and even by housecleaning products. If you want to keep the wood surfaces in your home clean and beautiful without damage, you need to consider the kind of wood and the treatment it's received. Here are some tips for cleaning and preserving wood surfaces.

General Cleaning for Wood Furniture and Paneling

One of the first rules of cleaning wood is this: never soak it with water. Wood is porous, and applying water will swell the pores. Water can also damage many types of finishes-most of us have a table or desk with tell-tale rings on them left by wet cups.

While dusting with a barely-damp cloth shouldn't harm painted wood surfaces, any application of water to oiled, lacquered, or unfinished wood is likely to leave permanent, disfiguring marks. Opt instead for a dry dusting cloth, or use the dusting attachment on your vacuum cleaner to keep wood furniture and paneling clean.

Clean Wood With Vinegar

It isn't a good idea to clean wood with pure, undiluted vinegar-in addition to leaving water marks, the acid in the vinegar could "eat" certain kinds of finishes. However, for polishing, a homemade treatment of half olive oil and half white vinegar can buff up stained and oiled wood finishes nicely. Simply apply with a soft clean cloth and rub in well. Blot off any excess with a second cloth.

For wood floors, add a cup of white vinegar to your mop bucket for extra grease-cutting power. Just be sure not to let pools of water stand on the wood afterwards, or you may wind up with water marks, especially on darker woods. Stand on a towel and "walk" it around the room to wipe up any excess water.

While vinegar can be safe, DON'T use other solvents like alcohol, ammonia, or acetone-these will damage your furniture or even strip off the paint.

Waxes for Wood Surfaces

Adding a shine to wood furniture, especially antiques or exotic woods, is as easy as applying some wax. Waxes made specifically for wood furniture are designed to provide extra protection from moisture, dust, and stains as well as a pleasing soft sheen. Even better, if you want to refinish your furniture at any point, wax will not cause problems.

Liquid waxes are the easiest to apply, and often dry quickly, but you may need to apply more than one coat to really see results in terms of both looks and protection. The results from liquid wax usually last up to four months, depending on how much wear your furniture gets.

Paste waxes offer superior, long-lasting protection to fine wood furniture. It isn't necessary to apply more than one coat to most woods, but the extra effort can take your wood from looking good to looking great. The hard, shiny finish given by paste wax is well worth your time for treating lacquered and oiled woods.

Removing Water Stains

As with stains on fabric, it's best to treat water stains on wood as soon as possible after they happen. Blot up any excess moisture and try one of the following home remedies, depending on what you have lying around the house:

" Apply shaving cream, leave for five minutes, and wipe up
" Apply real mayonnaise on a cloth. Let rest on the stain for up to ten minutes, and wipe off
" Gently apply metal cleaner. Leave for five minutes and wipe away excess

All-In-One Wood Cleaners

Finally, many products are available that treat wood while cleaning it. These products, while effective for painted, sealed, and laminated wood surfaces, should be tested in an inconspicuous place on unsealed or oiled woods before trying. These cleaners can be a convenient and effective solution for wood surfaces in areas that are frequently soiled, such as kitchens or bathrooms. Try products from Magic American, specially designed to clean sealed woods. Better yet, they are readily available at home improvement stores for reasonable prices.

Build a Solar Hot Water System Yourself

Build a Solar Hot Water System

Solar power is a wonderful way to get free hot water in your home? You can make a solar water heater easily and cheaply, perhaps for under $100 depending on the materials you have available. Buying a ready made solar hot water heater will cost upwards of $1,000 so building your own solar water heater will save you several hundred dollars, paying for itself in just a few months. After that your hot water will cost you nothing!

Solar heating works anywhere and at any time of the year ? even wintertime! It might not heat all your hot water (it often does, however) but it will certainly make a huge difference in your heating costs. Expect to save at least one third. Solar water heaters are simple devices, very efficient and environmentally friendly. Making a solar water heater is easily a weekend project, provided you plan the job in advanceand get all the parts assembled.

A typical solar water heater system simply includes a collector box with integral water pipes that are connected to the existing domestic hot and cold water pipes near your hot water cylinder. Normally a drain valve is fitted should you need to empty the system for some reason, such as leaving the house empty in winter. You will find the assembly easy and will not need any special skills or tools. Position the collector box so that it faces the mid-day sun, mounting it on the roof if you wish, or attached to a wall, but ideally close to your hot water tank to minimize heat losses through the pipes. All necessary materials will be available from your local hardware store, although you will probably find you already have some of them in your shed.

Installing a solar water heater will not harm your existing domestic hot water system. In fact, by lowering the use of the existing heaters, the solar hot water heater will help prolong the life of your boiler or immersion heater as well as save on utility bills. A further advantage is that solar heat is a renewable resource, so there is an green bonus for installing a solar hot water system as well.

And it could have other uses. Solar hot water systems can be used for heating swimming pools by providing a gentle, all-year-round source of free heating. Are you thinking about underfloor heating, or do you already have such a central heating system? This typically uses a constant supply of warm (not hot) water with a low flow rate. Solar hot water is a great way to heat your home for very little cost. You can find out more at www.buildthingsdirect.com.

It is amazing how satisfying it is to build a simple system that provides constant hot water without hurting our planet.

However, even though these systems are simple, it is easy to make mistakes during installation if you are not experienced enough. It makes a lot of sense to get expert guidance and advice at the planning stage and before you start to build. This is a small but vital investment that costs surprisingly little but will ensure you do everything safely and efficiently. If you want more ideas and recommendations, please visit buildthingsdirect.com for further details. In summary, we can assure you that making and installing your own solar water heater is a satisfying and fun project that will give you years of savings, so why not give it a go?
